We all know that being an EMT isn’t exactly the easiest career path out there. But that’s why you decided to be an EMT right?! You love the challenge, live for the thrill and feel great helping so many people every day.
If you’re new to EMT life, we here to have your back though the tough times.
So buckle up and let’s discuss the hard stuff no EMS class or instructor can prepare you for.
Expect to feel fatigued.
Being an EMT can be downright draining on the body. Standing for long hours at a time, moving heavy patients, and working long hours are just parts of the game. They’ll be days where everyone you encounter is panicked, stressed, and completely exhausted.
The good thing is you can combat stress and burnout with meditation, daily affirmations, and exercising 3 times a week.
There are still a ton of Covid calls.
There are tons of Covid emergencies happening every day. This means you’ll have to take extra precautions at work by sanitizing, disinfecting, and wearing your face mask. Sometimes the N-95 mask can leave face creases but if it’s for the safety of your patients, it’s a big must!
There will be a lot of paperwork to get through.
Paperwork is a hectic part of being an EMT. Not only do your notations have to be correct, they have to be thorough and concise. Be sure to ask your patients detailed questions to know the full story behind their emergency first.
Be prepared to sit in traffic.
You’ll be sitting and waiting a whole lot. Your patience will be tested in the ambulance and in E.R. hall rooms waiting around. Practice hip opening exercises and stretching drills to battle the back and leg stiffness. Your body will thank you.
